Learning How to Flirt Again

We interrupt the Italy updates to talk about my favorite topic...LOVE!

I'm still on my journey in finding love, my love, the love of my life. I've gotta say, it's getting harder the closer it feels. God speaks to me really clearly in this particular area, I think because I'm especially keen to listen :-) and I truly, wholeheartedly believe it's happening very soon, when this handsome young man finally walks into my life.

So I came across this video on YouTube.

It's really interesting. It talks about how over 40% of Americans over 18 are single and how most of us (still 100% Kenyan, just grouping myself in here for a second) when asked are looking for love, trust & companionship, but always assume that other single people are only looking for sex, money or status. So the guy asks the respondents to take a risk and tell someone that they are attracted to, what qualities they are attracted to. It's pretty sweet actually.

I live in that culture though, here at Bethel, where you affirm people and tell them what qualities they have that stand out. However, I must confess, it's a lot harder when it comes to guys I'm actually attracted to. I don't know why. I guess, I'm still in that school of thought where I like him, but I don't want him to know I like him, so I treat him different from how I treat other guys and I stare secretly but ignore him awkwardly, so in the end he stills knows I like him, except that now he thinks I'm a weirdo and ignores me anyway. Yeah...it's crazy.

This video made me think though.

It's one thing if our eyes meet across a crowded hallway and sparks fly...at this point though, I don't even remember what it looks like when eyes meet and how to give that flirtatious gaze without looking desperate. I used to be an expert! OH, MINISTRY SCHOOL WHAT HAST THOU DONE TO ME!!! Kidding, kidding, relax!

I should end this without making it any more embarrassing. Let's summarize...
  1. Take risks
  2. Always affirm people because everybody likes to hear how awesome they are
  3. Read a book on flirting and remind yourself about how it's done

:-)

Friday Night

Friday night seems like the perfect night to catch up on what's been happening on the dating scene :-) Hahaha, it's Friday night & I'm blogging, that catches you up!

I don't know I've learned a lot about myself these past couple of months and I'm kinda glad I'm sort of forced to process them with God. We talk about dating with my friends a lot, so I don't want to act coy & pretend I've not been thinking or praying about it. There are times of impatience, times of doubt where you think, "does anybody notice me :-( :-(" But there is also this overriding season of peace. I know myself & the dreams God's placed in  my heart. I've gotten a couple of dreams & prophetic words on family, plus I was born on Mother's Day, I'm taking that & running with it!

I've been thinking a lot about purity & boundaries. I think it's been hitting me just how much my choices will affect my kids. There are 2 versions of the example I've led for them. The first is a cautionary tale on how not to do life. Now that I have this abundant life, I get the chance to show them how to do life. I'm writing their script in a way. I don't want to be the type of parent who lays down the law & pushes them against me even more. I want to be able to show them different paths, the consequences of each and make them know they are powerful by the choices they make.

So what's the new version I want to write for them? It may look like dating in groups or having chaperones. It may look like discussing boundaries with Spiritual authority/parents. It may look like saving "I Love You" for my engagement. It may look like holding hands & hugging being the extent of our intimacy. These are definitely going to be interesting conversations to have with him, whoever he is.

Right now, it looks like developing great friendships. It looks like desiring God with all my heart. It looks like fighting for my breakthroughs in intimacy with God & friends. It looks like rejoicing with those who rejoice & not being jealous or comparing myself to them. It looks like being joyful & thankful. It looks like not being sleeping beauty with my life on hold until Prince Charming gets bold enough to ask me out ;-). It looks like trusting God & living out the fact that He is good.

Plenty of Fish, What's Your Bait?

Where you fish for romance and the bait you use to catch a mate says a lot about the virtues you live by. If you fish in the shark-invested waters of bars and parties, especially if you fish with only bait sharks bite, please don't be shocked when you catch a hammerhead. The type of bait you use often determined the kind of fish you will catch." Source

Taking Back My Heart Part 1

Last week I talked about how I don't believe in love anymore and how the concept of falling in love freaked me out more than exciting me and how maybe I shouldn't jump into it at all.

Last week, I lied.

Yes, the concept of love freaks me out. There is so much wrong about relationships these days. So much pressure and so much uncertainty. I spoke out of fear instead of faith and that was absolutely wrong.

This is what I forgot; through the dark, seemingly tempestuous times of trying to figure out how to find the elusive "happily ever after", one thing remains.

God.

In all my fear and uncertainty, I forgot that one simple fact. I've done relationships in the past alone, God was never in the equation. I saw a guy I liked and I pursued them and never gave a thought to God. Not even a "hmm maybe I should pray about it and sleep on it." If I saw a guy I liked, I switched on the flirt button and switched off the God button.

That's not me anymore. God gave me a vision and a plan for my life and of course  part of that is having a good relationship and that will not come with me hiding this brand new heart I keep talking about in fear. I wasn't even planning on posting this, but this song by my church-mate, worship team-mate and amazing singer I'm proud to be associated with fits into this post so well.

It's called "Heart Right Here" by Jaya.

For my non-Swahili speaking friends, the song is generally about how the devil tried to rob her joy and keep her locked up in fear and doubt. The part she sings, "nimechoka kufungiwa" means, "I'm tired of being restrained/locked up" the rest is in English and you can follow along. It's an awesome song and a great way to end this post. We're definitely coming back to this topic though.

"There used to be a heart right here and I want it back NOW!"

On Absence and Loving Love...{or not}

I'm sorry I've been a little sketchy on these here parts, I have a couple of stuff going on and that I have to deal with, but I do have a few posts scheduled...we have the Worship posts on Sundays and a few more post  left in the How To Tuesdays series, so you'll still see me pop up here and there.

After next week, I'll be sure to explain everything in greater detail :-)

For now, I've been thinking about love. I've been out of the dating game for a looong time. Like I haven't had a boyfriend for, wow almost more than 3 years a long time now. My entire life I've had 1 serious boyfriend and well, we all know how that ended. I've dated here and there but nothing serious or official. I've always thought that I'm fine with it, at this point in my life, I don't want to date at all and I thought it was because I was taking time out and focusing on myself and all that. To be honest I'm more happy now single than I was going out with all these randoms. My life for the most part is pretty fab. I've finally adopted that Christian mindset my mom has always wanted me to have, of "Isn't dating kinda useless if I'm not ready for marriage? Where am I supposed to take all that passion?"

A couple of days ago though, I saw this post on social media from a girl gushing about her new found romance and I just smirked and rolled my eyes a little bit and I was shocked at myself a little bit because I'm usually the "Yay! Go you!" type. So I realized, "Wow, I might actually have issues with this dating stuff and that's why I'm avoiding it!"

It wasn't so much a jealousy issue, it was a "no trust issue." Meaning, a part of me doesn't trust men at all. I mean, my past has been in the words of Penny Hart "roof stoof".{rough stuff}

In fact it's great that I've used Penny as an example because like her, I've gone in time and time again with the best of intentions and come out crushed on the other side and well, getting ready to do that again doesn't exactly feel like a great venture.

I know what you're thinking, what's the Christian thing to do here? I know my heart shouldn't be jaded, and it's not, God gave me a brand new heart and I'm not heartbroken AT ALL, I'm just scared out of my mind when the thought of falling in love or not falling in love pops into my head. In my mind, I'd be married right now. That was my life plan forever to be married by 24, the year I get out of college. I'm about to turn 23 in a couple of weeks, so obviously, that hasn't worked out.

I just don't know if I'm ready to do it. Put my brand new expensive heart out there for anyone to crush it. I've been through it and lemme just say it right now, those first few weeks of ecstasy are absolutely not worth the end result. Everybody around me is raising a baby, married, engaged, co-habitating, seriously dating or wanting to start dating. I.just.can't. Sometimes it works out, case in point my bestie and her boyfriend of 5 years, sometimes it doesn't case in point...do I need to finish that?

I don't know if this means I'm carrying baggage into a relationship because well, I'm not looking for one. I wouldn't even call it baggage, I call it self-preservation. This heart was bought at a price, His blood, and I know how much it took for God to get me to a place where I could love again at all, so putting His healing on the line for a couple of weeks of excitement...?

There are so many cons to giving your heart away. Too many.

The end.

For once I'm not going to try and explain this away or find the silver lining or the inspirational quote to push me out of this. Right now in my life, my heart and mind are just sitting here.

Unhappily Ever After?

A couple of things freak me out about relationships:
  • Secrets
  • Falling “out of love”
  • Cheating/Affairs
  • Break-ups/Divorce

I mean, for most people, relationships are a major part of life. You’re born into a family, you grow up, you get a job, you start another family – with friends and soon after with a partner and kids, and the cycle continues. At any point of your life, you’re part of a family. Good or bad.

I just read that Deitrick and Damita Haddon just got a divorce. He put this up on his Facebook page::

Yes, this isn’t the first high-profile Christian personality divorce. But, this get’s to me because they’re in WorshipL. We’ve seen a bunch of “Christian” divorces. Every single time, the reason is the same;

“I put my ministry before my spouse.”

I feel like this line has been repeated so many times, it’s a little bit of a cliché. We’ll probably never know the real reasons, but whatever they are, the fact is, I don’t get how a couple could have technically done everything we’re advised to do in Church/Christian circles, you know, follow God’s calling on your life, marry a person who loves God like you do, pray together, serve together, and still, they end up in divorce. Or affairs, another Christian artist Da Truth was caught up in an affair last year! Juanita Bynum was apparently abused. Paula White got divorced too.

This just freaks me out! I mean, there are already enough unknowns in the world, after the wedding, the unknowns are supposed to stop! I don’t need to go to bed every night thinking, “Oh my God, what secrets is he hiding? Is he still in love with me? Is he having an affair? Is our marriage alright?”

Also, when you realize your marriage is in trouble, is it that hard to work on in? In my {probably naïve} mind, I’d think that when you realize you put your job before your wife, you’d take a month off and work on your marriage. You’d pray about it, get help, get people to stand with you and pray for you. Is it that prayer isn’t enough?

Like I said, I have no idea - none of us do - what went on inside these marriages, but, I just can’t allow myself to believe that there’s no hope. That after the commitment is made and you hit a rocky patch, the only option is to quit. I can’t believe in a world, in a relationship, in a marriage with no hope. I can’t believe in “till ‘falling out of love’ does us part”.

A lot of people tell me I’m a dreamer. That in reality it all goes downhill after the wedding, and the claws come out. That being “in-love” only exists when you guys are courting. That I’m going to get sick of the dirty stinky socks and underwear everywhere except the hamper. Irritated with the guy coming home late and going out all weekend, squeezing the toothpaste from the middle and leaving the cap off…argh! Frustrated when he just doesn't understand me!!!

Relationships are hard; I personally have no idea how to make them work.

All I know is that in my own life, all I can do is just pray and seek God on how to love. God is love and every part of Him spills out love, and He knows how I need to love whoever I’m with.

I need to seek God on how to commit, how to be honest, how to open my heart, how to handle conflict, not just in a relationship, but in my own life. I need to seek God on how to handle and relate and cope with different personalities while retaining and growing my own. I need to seek God on how to GROW UP!

When you audition for a Choir/Worship Team, let’s say as an alto, after the Worship Pastor hears you sing, he’ll put you in a group with a soprano and a tenor to listen to how well you can maintain your voice in a crowd. You can’t really “fake it till you make it”. A song is going to come up and if you try to sing high, your voice will crack and you aren’t going to make it.

I believe it works the same way in life. You need to seek God to make you who he created “you” to be. This practice of being a different person in different relationships just won’t work. Trust me, been there done that!

Somewhere out there is someone who can handle the real you. Once you find them, how much easier will it be to put in the work when you aren’t focused on being somebody else? Yeah, it’s work; from day 1 you need to build the right foundation so you’re not in the middle of everything in a couple of years discontent, irritated and stuck, or worse, divorced and heartbroken.

Life is work. Relationships are work. Marriages are work. THAT IS LIFE!

Anyway, like I said, I have no idea AT ALL how to make a relationship work. I have been a big fat failure, but before I jump into another doomed relationship…I’m determined to learn.

Christians and Friendship

I think I've been blessed with some of the best friends a girl could ask for. I don't have a lot of friends, we don't all go to happy hour or do reunions together :-) I'm not really the bare your heart to anyone type, but the friends I do have are pretty special.

I'm going to introduce them to you guys one day, but not today. Today I want to talk about one thing that's really been on my heart these past couple of days...authenticity in friendship. I think the reason I consider these guys my best friends is the fact that they've seen me at my worst and still they come back for more. I get crazy and these crazy people put up with it :-) I'm pretty lucky.

I'm trying to not be one person to one group of people and another person to another group of people. My friends know I have hard times, I struggle. They know when I'm happy and when I'm not. They know when I mess up. There are times when I try and hide my issues from them and be all happy and perky and act like my life is perfect. I think there's a pressure with that, especially after I got saved.

I think though that the devil (don't run away, come back! I won't mention him again!) likes it when we keep things in the dark. When for example, I hide something from Michelle, like a boy issue, for example, I lose that accountability and things done in the dark end up messing you up. However, when I talk to her, I kind of see things better and I'm more enLIGHTENED (pun intended) about whatever it is. I think my biggest issue in life is boys, so this is the perfect example for me.

I also think there's an issue of hypocrisy. When you act like you have it all together, what sort of witness is that to your friends? Christian life isn't about perfection, it's about a gracious God, pulling you out of the muck and helping you be more like Him. It isn't about being perfect enough to love. We love Him because He first loved us

If I act like everything's good, then God forbid, I ever burn out, that'll drive a huge gap between my friends and God, because it'll be like, "God isn't real, if He was real Joanne wouldn't have burned out." If on the other hand I'm honest about my struggles and my ups and downs with this whole salvation thing, it'll be like, "If God can use someone as imperfect as Joanne, He can use me too." or "If God helped Joanne through such and such, He can help me too."

You know when you meet a guy {and by you, I mean me :-)} you kind of struggle to impress them and be whoever you feel they want you to be so that they like you and you don't act like yourself and it starts this whole cycle of lies and issues that you cant run away from and before you know it you're crying on the bathroom floor wondering what went wrong and your friends and family wonder why you're still single when you are such an awesome person. {Wah! That actually summarizes my dating life hehehe} Well, what went wrong is that you weren't yourself, and you are a great person when you're yourself, but you see you were never yourself.

I personally hate dating, I wish I could start from 5 years in where you're both comfortable and settled and not going through the whole, "should I call him? Why isn't he calling me? Should I text him?" dance. Unfortunately that's not how it works.

So, I'm praying a lot for God to change the face of my dating life. That if I meet #thatguy, I'm not caught up in impressing him with what I think he would like, but that I could just be a friend to him like I'm a friend to my BFF's. In all things keeping God and His plans for me as my first priority. I don't want to toss God aside and focus on a relationship that may or may not end in heartbreak and then have to go back with my tail in between my legs, head buried in shame and heart broken into a million pieces. At the end of everything, He's basically all I have left, I've learnt that the hard way, so Him and I stick together :-)

I'm praying that I'll just get lost in Him and all this other stuff won't matter so much to me. I think despite all my faults and foolish ways, God's just been so great to me and has given me such joy, that last night me and Michelle had created such drama thinking about boys and despite that drama, I was dancing around in my room, happy! Singing "This Is What You Do" by Matt Stinton. Like the song says, "You make me come alive." I'd be dumb to let that go.

Anyway, just thought I'd share in case anybody's going through the same thing. Would love to hear from you.

As My Blog Gets Older, So Do I

Having this blog is incredible because I get to see all the transitions I've gone through in my life in the past 2 years. I know it's weird, but I feel like blogging is God's gift to me in a lot of ways.

Ahh, God.

I look back at where my blog/life was at my 1st post, and where it is now, and my heart just races with fear because I absolutely don't want to go back to being who I was back then. My life was a mess! I was battling depression, I was dating these random people, I was just so unhappy.

Right now, I'm the happiest I've been in a while.  I like to think that I've changed, and I'm this newly evolved version of myself, but really, I haven't changed all that much. I'm still the silly Jo, with all the craziness, corny jokes and high expectations of romance and all the stupid stuff I see on TV. I'm still the Jo who'll light up with a text and get bummed without one. I'm still the Jo who at the end of the day will need to crawl back into God's arms when the rug is pulled out from under her, such is the world :-) In all these things, I'll have this blog to look back on and I think that's pretty awesome.

So, what about you guys, do you think you've changed much as your blog has gotten older? Are you still the same person you were when you started? I'd love to here from you.

Feeling Like an Old Maid

Last night I was talking to my mom about how it seems all my friends are getting engaged and having babies and here I am, with this one year pledge of singleness we made at Church in Febrauary, and how even after this one year, I might end up doing a Ministry internship which as I've seen so far, some don't allow dating, and even after the internship, I'll be spending so much time trying to move to a new city and finding a job and actually making something out of the nothing I currently have and might be so busy I don't even have time to date! So, in reality, I'm looking at about 3 years before I can even have the thought of settling down and falling in love.

If you know me, if you've read my blog, you know how freaked out this makes me.
  • In High School, my life plan was to finish High School, move after a year and get married by the time I was 22, have my first kid at 24 and so on.
  • After High School, I got caught up in the expectations to finish college, make a career, get married, which pushed out a lot of MY dreams
  • Right now, I'm trying to catch up to the High School dream, but now it goes like, know God, experience God, move to a new city, learn God, get married, teach God, get cute babies and so on
My mom, is encouraging me and saying everything that a mom is supposed to say, "finish school", "get a job", "don't be in a hurry or else you'll settle for anything that comes along" and I was telling her, yeah I get all that, I don't want to settle, I want to be loved completely and to be in love and I want to be happy, but I also want to be a young, hot wife and a young, hot mom. I want to be settled with someone who has the same dreams and passions as me (read, God) and someone who we can work together, so that we start working now.

She may say all those things, but the fact remains, she got married at 24, like most of my uncles and aunts. My cousin, who we used to live with, got married at 24, my sister met her husband at 23, my sister in law married my brother at 25. I'm turning 22, I FEEL LIKE AN OLD MAID!!!

Yeah, I know, I'm supposed to be "the one" before I find "the one" and that's what this year's pledge is for and there's stuff I'm building on my own, even with the Ministry stuff. Just to be clear, honestly, this has been an amazing year so far and I wouldn't give it up even if my dream guy walked through the door right now, I've gotten to experience God more in 3 months than I have in 21 years. But I think even God gets that sometimes its easier to work with somebody and to have somebody.

At the end of the conversation with my mom though, an amazing thing happened. I just got this amazing reassurance from Jesus, a.k.a, my awesome, awesome friend, that I don't need to freak about this. He's got my back. Everything's going to be OK, and that filled my heart so much I ended up tweeting this;

I honestly just love Jesus. He's awesome.

Anyway, later last night I was listening to a podcast from Gateway Church, Austin and John Burke just talks about how when Jesus met people who needed something, like the blind men who cried out to Him, He asked them an obvious question, "What do you want?" I mean, duh, they wanna not be blind anymore, they wanna be healed. But Jesus asks a question that we sometimes are too afraid to ask God, because we feel like it's beneath God to hear us, or its too selfish to pray when there's so many other things to pray for, but Jesus asks this question so many times, there's gotta be something to it.

So, I laid it all out there, all my desires, all the crazy things that I hope for, that I see when I picture my future, all the stuff that makes my heart race, like praying or talking or singing or like getting to minister with someone, or watching him minister. Small things like finally having someone put time and thought into my birthday or valentines day (remember I've never had a boyfriend on valentines day :-/ ) And more than any of that, just getting to put into action, or just experiencing love, the kind of love that He's teaching me. I prayed about finishing school in time. I prayed about getting an opportunity to move and find a job and a house smoothly and hassle free.

Like I said, I laid out all the crazy things that look too big and too impossible to ever happen. I'd rather ask and not get than live wondering "What if?" "Why didn't I?" I prayed that if it came down to it, I'm always going to choose Him. It usually takes me a while, but at the end of it, I always choose Him, and with what He's done and how He's changed me so far, it'll probably not take as long a while for me to choose Him. But, I cant help what I feel, and what my desires are, you know?

I always say, God is my dad. He's got my back. Even when it comes to stuff like this.

How Do You Know

So, I’m a little late on commenting on the epic divorce, that is Kim K and Kris H…(not that my comments are warranted or at all necessary)… and the focus of my post isn't Kim-bashing as most other are.

I definitely did a lot of Kim bashing when the story broke, but then, I realized I went through a break-up with someone I thought I loved for 8 months.  (Even though looking back we know that was SO not the case) So, I do sort of understand her frame of mind. Nobody wants to stay in a relationship that doesn’t work. But, I disagree with the huge wedding and publicity, when clearly; her feelings had already changed before the wedding.

The point of my post though is this…how do you know whether a relationship will work in the long run or if you’re just caught up in the moment?

I mean, you can’t really say that it’s time. I mean sister Khloe met hubby Lamar and got married 6 weeks later and now they’re clocking 3 years of marriage, whereas Kim had almost a year between meeting and wedding.

I think that’s my question for 2012.

How do you know if it’s real?

Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

Apart from that, what’s been happening so far is that, I moved back home. My mom was feeling a little lonely, and I transferred to City Campus which is half an hour from the house. So that’s more convenient for me.

Also started a couple of new ventures, that I’ll fill you in on gradually.

Again, I begin the year on a solitary note…actually not begin, more like continue as from this day :-)

The T-Word

I'm a research girl. Like, if I have a problem, I will Google and read the hell out of it. So, lately I've been reading a lot about trust. Love and sweetness is all good in a relationship, but definitely trust is the backbone of any relationship.

So, here are some tips I found about building trust in a relationship

1. Be truthful, don't lie about the small stuff, it adds up

2. Be reliable, let your actions match your words

3. Set boundaries

4. Be trusting, innocent until proven guilty

5. Be fair, don't be imposing, jealous or naggy

6. Be trustworthy, treat your lovvah (hehehe) like you would want to be treated

7. Be calm, be a rock that can be leaned on

8.Talk about everything

Most importantly,

Lesson on E.S

Lately I've been thinking about how to argue effectively. Yeah, I know I should be thinking of how to love better, how to make my relationships last longer or that kind of stuff and I do, but arguing is important too.

Think about it, a healthy, happy, fun relationship should be composed of two individual people with their own sets of values, beliefs, opinions, wants, needs and preferences. Those might ideally match, but they won't ever be exactly the same. Differences arise and you need to figure out how to solve them.

In the past, I'd try as much as possible to avoid confrontation, mostly because I feared judgement and I didn't want to be a nag etc. As a result, I was really, really, really unhappy. At the end my relationship wasn't the better for it, in fact at the end my complacency and being a door-mat and in his words, being a "people-pleaser" is what made it end so badly.

Arguing with your loved one doesn't mean you hate them. Think about it. You like a certain hat, but he doesn't like it when you wear it.

"You selfish scumbag, I can wear whatever the hell I please"

"Babe, I love you but I like this hat and unless you have a valid reason why I can't wear it, I'm wearing it"

Response 1, gets you in a huge fight. Response 2, makes it a safe place to air your opinions, and he might actually be saving you from looking like an idiot going to work in a floppy sun-hat and jeans.

So, Emotion Seperation, or as I like to call it, E.S means remembering this line, "I'm angry now, but I have to keep in mind that I love this guy, and this silly argument won't matter 2 years from now." Luckily if you are being too demanding, your guy will be rude suicidal unfair honest enough to tell you, you're being too persistent.

New Life Lessons

So, over the last couple of days, I have learnt that I have a very short temper and I get mad at the smallest of things really easily.

But, today I pledge to make a conscious decision on what my reactions will be to every day decisions. Will I get angry and storm off or go silent on people, no. What I will do is stop, take a breath, try to see if the action deserves that level of reaction, and move from there.

I also learnt that people need to talk about stuff, not just assume the other party knows what their thinking. It's an unfair and unrealistic expectation that leads to arguments and resentment. Most problems can be solved by a nice sit down and the freedom and the safety and the trust it takes to be completely honest with someone.

I also learnt that my family is very different from others. When I grew up, voices were loud and emotions and thought were scattered. Other people, not so much...I can't change who I am, I'm the girl that talks too much, and over-analyzes her thoughts and feelings. I have to try and make a conscious effort to realize that not everyone can be like that...and even when people are sweet and gracious enough to listen and even understand me, I should try to take a breath and tone it back a little.

Anyway, I'm thankful for patient friends and family, and a chance to learn and grow more comfortable in being myself without fear of being judged or punished...thankyou and I love you!

Thoughts

At the end of yet another exhausting work day, I got home to find a black out...this sucked for two reasons, firstly I had a couple of new DVDs I wanted to watch, and secondly, I was having one of those nights where you just dont want to be alone with your thoughts.

Alone with my thoughts I was and I'm happy because it gave me a chance to think a little and clear my head.
Life has just been sort of speeding past me and I'm living in the moment, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it's nice once in a while to step back and plan a little.

Some of the stuff I was sorting through my head were:

> school...I'm debating whether to sit for my CPA Papers this December or skip them all together and focus on my degree, especially considering final exams may clash and I might end up having to pick one over the other...

> work...my internship has been amazing so far, but its slowly but surely coming to an end, and I have to start planning for life after here. I love working and it's going to be tough goin back to not working, so I have to figure out if I want to do that or get another job, or whatever. Also, as long as I'm here I have to keep trying to be at the top of my game...figure out what my strengths and weaknesses have been.

> love...don't get me started....
Anyway, that's a little bit of what's been going on...

High School Stories

I went to a very public, very strict High School. It was a boarding School, actually top twenty Schools in the whole country, so academically it was great, but I repeat way too strict.

What happens when you stick 1000 girls in a confined area with no outside contact except an occasional letter from home, or if you were lucky, a cute boyfriend who played rugby in another school...hmmm...I digress. What happens, is girls go crazy!!!

Every Sunday night, we'd have different groups holding Bible Studies out in the quad in the middle of the two huge dormitory buildings. Every Sunday night at around 8 p.m, it began...

Screaming, applauding, laughing, or as we called them back then, "holy screaming", "holy laughter", "holy laughing"

Picture 12 year old me, because I went to school when I was 12, in this new place, away from home for the first time ever, Presbyterian-Raised, seeing all this!!! I was seriously freaked out.

Now I don't know if it was really the Holy Spirit or it was just emotions and adrenaline gone wild...so I usually just reserve my comments on all that stuff.

Monday after my first Sunday Night experience...we were in class, and we were being asked the "what do you want to be after school-and-how are you working toward it"

So, I was freaked out by the previous night and I was sure that if I didn't "step up" for God, I would surely go to hell. So, I raised my hand with tears running down my cheeks and said, "God has just told me I want to be a pastor" Guys, God had not told me anything, that, I'm sure of.

But, remembering that just got me thinking, why do we do what we do? Is it because everyone else is thinking, or out of fear like me, or because you truly enjoy what you do and can't picture yourself anywhere else.

What I've decided to do, is live on purpose, not accidentally. Like:

  • Do because I enjoy what I'm doing (although sometimes like now studying for my CPA I'm guessing I'll have to beg God for passion, because it's a means to an end)
  • Love because I truly love and because I can't picture doing anything else but loving the people God placed into my life

And so on...you get the idea...

Do You Love Me Enough To Let Me Go :: Switchfoot

Where was I? Oh, I was reminded of this:

Luke 14:28-32  For which of you, intending to build a tower, doesn't sit down first, and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it? Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, saying, "This man began to build, and was not able to finish."
Or what king, going to make war against another king, doesn't sit down first, and consult whether he'll be able with ten thousand men to wage war against him with twenty thousand? So that if he can't, he can send an ambassador to arrange a peaceful resolution, while the other is yet a great way off.

Isn't my heart like a tower, I'm spending all this time building it up, why should I let someone come and tear me down, because he didn't sit down and count the cost, or most importantly because I didn't sit down and count the cost?

That also led me to remember this other amazing song by Switchfoot, Do You Love Me Enough To Let Me Go from the album Hello Hurricane which as usual you can buy on Amazon at $7.99 or Ksh. 640. I wish I coulld buy a bunch of them and give them out here or make them available for less than Ksh. 640 because everyone should have this album. Anyway, we'll pray on that....back to the song...

Enough To Let Me Go by Switchfoot
Oh, I'm a wandering soul
I'm still walking the line that leads me home alone
All I know I still got mountains to climb on my own
On my own

Do you love me enough to let me go?
Do you love me enough to let me go?
To let me follow through, let me fall for you, my love
Do you love me enough to let me go?

Back from the dead of winter
Back from the dead and all our leaves are dry
You're so beautiful tonight
Do you love me enough to let me go?
Back from the dead we went through
Back from the dead and both our tongues are tied
You look beautiful tonight

Do you love me enough to let me go?.....

But every seed dies before it grows

Do you love me enough to let me go?
Do you love me enough to let me go?
To let me follow through, let me fall for you, my love
Do you love me enough to let me go?

Breathe it in and let it go
Every breath you take is not yours to own
It's not your to hold
Do you love me enough to let me go?

Do you love me enough to let me go?
Do you love me enough to let me go?
To let me follow through, let me fall for you, my love
Do you love me enough to let me go?

Like I've said a bunch of times before, Jon Foreman is an amazing writer and his words mean different things to different people, this song to me, could mean two things. First of all to the single people, every seed has to die before it grows, so I'm not entirely wrong in wanting to be single for a while :-) and for the people who are dating, to make sure you aren't holding each other back from achieving the full potential of your purpose, for example, in this love story from another blogger, Erin, they were both committed to growing closer to God before anything else and every time their friendship started moving into relationship zone, the guy would say they should take a step back and make sure they aren't putting themselves or their own needs before God.

So to cut this short, here's what I've learnt and decided. My love lesson for the week, if you will,
  1. Firstly, not to judge guys generally. Just because some of the ones I've dated have messed up, doesn't mean they're ALL bad.
  2. To still continue taking time off to rebuild. "All I know, I still got mountains to climb on my own" and a relationship with God should be my first priority.
  3. To really take time in building friendships and not just jump into relationships like I've always done in the past.
  4. To make sure that I (and the guy) have really sat down and counted the costs. This is like, when you've been friends for a while and you know a lot about each other and you still want to pursue things, you sit down and come up with a game plan/rules of play
  5. While sitting down to count the costs, also take some time off to make sure your decisions aren't clouded by emotions or rather hormones! "Do you love me enough to let me go" and this is where Erin's blog and the song come into play.

As always, the Enough To Let Me Go lyrics are the property of Switchfoot and their Label and are only provided here for educative purposes. I'm sure you'll love the song, please, please buy the Hello Hurricane CD through the links above and support the most amazing band on the planet!!!

Dating and Valentine's Day Anticipation

On Tuesday at school I got around 3 missed calls from my cousin. When I got out and called him back he told me to meet him as soon as possible and that it was really urgent. So, we met at one of the cafes at school. I was pretty worried, I thought something bad had happened. When he got there, we went through the ususal pleasantries, "How's your mom, how's home?" etc etc, but in the back of my mind I was thinking, "Get to the emergency already!!!" Finally I couldn't take it and I asked him, "O.k, so what's up"

"I have a wife." Now, wife in some Nairobi men's context , means a long-term girlfriend, hehe, but dare a chic say, "I have a husband", you'll be left with a cloud of dust in your face and wind blowing through your hair from the guy running away.... lol, anyway, I digress, let's go on.

"I have a wife, and valentines day is coming up and I want to get her jewelery, something really nice, that's why I need a female opinion from you. If you could go shop for me and tell me how much I need that would be nice" he said. You know a guy is in love when he's thinking about Valentine's Day in January!!!

So, here I am, single girl. Knowing I will still be single by Valentines, and this guy wants me to go look for jewelery that I like, that I know no one will be buying for me, so that he can buy them for his girlfriend. I'm really starting to think God is rubbing this whole "being single" thing in my face a little bit too much. First, my very-much-in-love best friend, then seating me alone in-between those two very-much-in-love couples in Church, then me parking my car next to that very-much-in-love guy who opened the door for his girl that other time, then now my very-much-in-love cousin. I can't stop laughing this is just so funny :-D

Of course I agreed and went shopping for my cousin. I told him where to find good deals, I even gave him different price ranges, from the Somali guys who sell (quite like 95%) real silver in Eastleigh, to the nice pieces at Hilton Arcade and Nakumatt Lifestyle to the very nice pieces at Enkarasha (is enka rasha 2 words or one...anyway...) Then I told him, making the girl feel special all day, will make a much greater memory than just a piece of jewelery, so I told him to do all those things Nairobi girls no longer experience, going to the movies, going to lunch some place where it's not just chips and chicken on the menu, and nothing beats black forest cake and ice cream on valentines. I'm really happy for him and I hope he follows my tips :-)

Now, shopping for this other girl, I got to thinking...what would I want for Valentines? Or rather dating in general. I'm a pretty simple girl, I like anything, that is except mint chocolate and vanilla ice cream. But, I'm simple in the sense that, I'd far more appreciate a gift that looks like a little thought was put into it, like if you buy a card, don't just pick anything with a heart on it, the message should be cute, and/or maybe a little note in there from the guy as well. Tip to guys: in a card don't just fill in the "To and From" part otherwise that thing will end up in the trash after a few weeks, so put in something the girl would want to hold on to. I still have a birthday card from a guy who liked me and even though we don't talk anymore, I still smile when I look at what he wrote.

Also, I'm a big fan of jewelery. But in that case, presentation is key. I once got really gorgeous earrings from a friend of mine that came in a gorgeous red velvet box, and I love looking at that box...I mean I love the earrings too but they look so pretty in that box! :-)

Most people don't like flowers because they don't last long or whatever, but for me, you could never go wrong with flowers, the couple of  times my friends have gotten me flowers I always felt amazing, even the single roses we're given at church for Christmas or Valentines they always last with me, till Tuesday because I get home and put them in water. I love flowers, I just think it's a nice gesture. And the pink girl in me is always touched :-)

The experience of the day though, is what counts most for me. Was I happy? Was he happy or did he spend the whole time complaining? I once had this boyfriend who took me out a few times, and he complained all the time, that one didn't last very long. Other things I'll ask myself are, if the experience we had was new, will I remember it a long time to come or was it just the same old routine? Here I mean, for example, if you're going out for pizza, it's not just Pizza Inn that serves pizza in Nairobi, there are a bunch of other new places to go, for the same price. Personally, I think I'm starting to be one of those girls/women who can enjoy going to those nyama choma (grilled meat) and one-man guitar kind of places and have more fun than I would at a burger joint or a pizza place. Or doing something touristy that other people might consider shady like going to the National Park. I've suggested that to a couple of guys I dated and they always laugh, so to heck with it, I'm taking myself!! :-)
I would much rather go on an active date like that or horse riding (which by the way only costs Ksh. 500) or going to Fourteen Falls or swimming or bike riding or paint ball or anything like that, if worse comes to worse, even walking in Uhuru Park, rather than sitting in a restaurant in town all day. I'm all for "gazing into each others' eyes" but after a while, won't you get bored with each other???

But, to keep it simple, any acts of love and care and a little bit of understanding of my personality, that would do it for me.

Anyway, that's just me. I'm sure you guys have your preferences too?

Who Are Your Friends?

As I've mentioned many times this weekend, I missed Church today and I feel so bummed about it but luckily the amazing guys in the tech team were live on twitter so I got all the notes. They did such a great job, I was in a car on my way out of Nairobi but I felt like I was seated right there in Church.

If you're reading this, I'd love it if you would follow Mavuno on Twitter, at least you'll get some amazing quotes and great encouragement, plus know what's going on with them. Incase the link doesn't work, it's twitter.com/mavunochurchorg. Also check out the Mavuno website

I loved Pastor M's sermon as usual, and here are the notes. It's taken me an hour but I managed to piece it together from twitter. Enjoy!

This is the year we're really connecting with God and this February we are encouraging the congregation to do a month long fast. We really want to listen to God & hear him speak to us this year. Fasting is one of the ways you can do this. Read more on fasting &prepare.

Now, this show ran for ten years, it continues to sell millions worldwide. It won 63 different awards. The final episode was watched by an estimated 51 million in the US alone. It won 6 Emmy's. What's the name of the show? Friends! The reason it was so successful was because it spoke to a need in young people who need friends and identify with the characters on the show. They found that the companionship, comfort and support they got from each other was the ideal solution to the pressures of life.

What we learnt last week is that money, no matter how much you have will not make you successful if you have a cracked foundation. People who care for us and have our best interests at heart, that’s one of the ways that would make us successful, and in many ways, that's what Friends was about.

On the other hand, these friendships though depicted as funny and authentic, had many serious flaws. They were over sexualized, became dysfunctional, led to broken marriages and resulted in much pain and stress. The question is this – is there another way to do it?

We believe there is - God's Way.

We’re going through a series called ‘Shinda Maisha’ and learning about how to prepare for REAL success through the stages of life. It’s an opportune time to talk about this, with the explosion of the many lotteries which are teaching a generation of Kenyans that success is winning a lot of money. Just this last week, the Shinda Smart competition was banned for lack of integrity of process, If you sent in 60/= installments, our sympathies to you

Last week we talked about the foundation years, and the importance of teaching values when your child is aged 0-10. We learnt that 'It’s not luck you need; it’s training’. Even if you won Ksh. 25M but have not developed a value foundation, the money will destroy you!

Today we want to look at the next stage, the years of education, when one is aged between 11-25. Some of you are at this stage in life and so this will be very useful. Some of you have children in this stage so we hope this guides you. Many of you are past this stage, but as you listen, I trust that you will see areas with cracks in your life that you can address.

The educational years are a recent addition into a person’s development, and are a direct result of the modern education system. This stage was non-existent before colonialism because prior to that time, children would go through a rite of passage and transition directly into adults. If they were men; they would become warriors or protectors of the family. If they were women, they would be prepared for marriage & family. Even in the West, the whole concept of teenager didn’t exist before the Industrial Revolution!

Today, these ‘teen’ and ‘young adult’ years are seen as an intermediate stage when a person is not a child anymore, but still doesn’t carry a clear adult role in society. For some of you, this stage ended early because you took on a job but for many, it lasts till after college. At this stage, several things are going on in a person’s life.

  • Physical and emotional changes - these begin with adolescence, as we begin to form a sexual identity. For both girls and boys it is a tumultuous time. Do you remember your teenage years?
  • Independent thinking – People at this stage begin to want a degree of independence to experiment and to test out their own theories about life, as they’re establishing a sense of identity.
  • Self Consciousness –You want to fit in, to be popular. That’s why till today, high school boys will roll up their sleeves, turn up collars etc
  • Peer Influence - Young people at this stage no longer see their parents as all-knowing or all-powerful and often have developed other relationships that they now consider as wiser and more ‘with it’

With the influence of the media, many kids today are highly sexualized and begin acting out sexually as early as 5 or 6 years old. Many parents, totally oblivious to the fact that this is not normal dress their children suggestively because that’s what’s ‘in fashion’. This is a disaster waiting to happen when those children become teenagers.

Many parents are too busy to realize that even the content being marketed as children’s TV contains very un-childlike values. All these things are happening when the person is in school, and the focus is on getting good grades, getting into a good college, and getting a good degree.
Many parents have no idea what challenges their teens/young adults are going through. And so they either continue treating them as children or they give up and allow them to experiment without guidance. Some parents try hard to be their children’s peer (a la Gilmore Girls) unfortunately; none of these parenting approaches help us win in life.

What are the lessons that a person should learn through the educational years? There are several, including how to handle money wisely. In the US for instance, it was not uncommon to see a young Kenyan student racking up thousands of dollars in credit-card debt, spending years out of college trying to pay it off. All they had learnt at school and home was irrelevant to help them succeed in the adult world! Sports and academics are important, because not only because they’ll help you make money but also because they’ll teach you the disciplines of hard work

One of the most important lessons to learn is to teach your teens or to learn for yourself as a young adult is how to form and maintain positive friendships. What we’re saying today is if you won the lottery or succeed in your career but don’t have a wall of solid & dependable friends around you it will leave you even more isolated and lonely, surrounded by sycophants who don’t care for you. That is a recipe for failure in life!

The whole book of Proverbs is written to a young man in this stage of life. One of the themes it emphasizes greatly is that of positive relationships. Please turn to one such example;

Proverbs 27:6-10: Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter will taste sweet. Like a bird that strays from its nest, is a man who strays from his home. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel. Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father, and do not go to your brother’s house when disaster strikes you– better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.

Our passage shows us some of the qualities you need to look for in a positive friendship, as well as some of the qualities you need to have if you are to be such a friend to others. There are at least three tests for positive friendship…

  1.    The Realness Test

V.6-7 says ‘Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet’.

High school socialization taught us to view relationships with ladies as sexual; and relationships with guys as competitive and vice versa. In other words, you learnt how to make superficial relationships because you were constantly projecting an image.

One day, my mentor, Pastor Oscar challenged me. He’d watched me take out a girl for dinner one week and then a different one the next week. When he asked my intentions, I said they were both just friends. He told me, ‘there are some men who lead men, and there are some men who chase women!’ Although I made the decision then to change how I related to women, it took me years to learn to make good, healthy friendships with other men.

Who are your friends? This passage is saying that you should learn to make friends with people who can be real with you and not have to maintain a certain image. Those who will speak the truth, in love to you. People who are not impressed by your reputation - not ‘mafans’ who only tell you what you want to hear.

Who are your friends? Are you able to speak the truth in love to them? Do they feel free to ask you the hard questions about life? Do you find yourself only able to share deeply with people of the opposite gender? Do you find it hard to form good healthy friendships with people of the same gender? These are signs that your walls are broken & need repair.

  1. 2.    The Value-Add Test

Verse 8-9 ‘Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel’. This quality has to do with value-addition. Do your friends reinforce positive values in your life or do they cause you to misbehave? Are you a better person when you are with them?

Psalms1-Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. Who are your friends? This passage says rather than being surrounded by people who are cool or popular, we should surround ourselves with people who help us become better people.

Along the highway to God’s purpose, you’ll need travel companions. These are the friends who share your values, who believe the same things about reality that you do. You need friends who will help you resist the sexual pressure in the media.

For example, if you believe that time with your wife and family comes before career advancement or personal entertainment, it’s difficult to walk the distance with friends who have the opposite values. This happens to many men. Your ‘boys’ start making fun of you at the office “This guy is always running home after work. He must have a curfew!” Next thing you know, it’s after work and there you are, going for a drink with the guys.

The problem is you never learnt to apply the value-add test to your friendships. Amos 3:3 asks the question “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” (KJV)

For parents, one thing you can do in this regard is put your children in touch with other children who share their values. Something else my parents did when we were that age is that they allowed us to invite our close friends over, and got to know them. They were teaching us to influence our peers positively, rather than waiting to be influenced negatively.

Proverbs 27:17 ‘As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend’

  1. 3.    The Commitment Test

“Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father and do not go to your brother’s house when disaster strikes you – better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.”

There are those friends who give you a lot of airtime when you’re doing well. You go for plots together and generally are tight, but when things are not going well, you would never dare share it with them because you have to keep up the façade.

John 2:23, tells us “Many believed in Him as they saw the miracles He performed. But Jesus did not trust Himself to them.”

While He didn’t chase them away, He knew the difference between a fan and a true friend. And He had such friends.

Who are your friends? Do you have friends who are committed to you no matter what? Who will stay by your side in good times or in bad? Who you call when things are not good and you can count on them to make sacrifices on your behalf? Do you have friends who can count on you in the same way? If not, it’s a great sign that your walls are damaged and in need of repair.

So who are your friends? We’re saying that the key lesson in your teen and young adult years needs to be building positive friendships.

If you didn’t learn to build such friendships. You are setting yourself up for loneliness, sexualized and competitive relationships. Even in marriage, you won’t know how to be friends. You’ll need outside stimulation and entertainment to keep your relationship together as you don’t know how to sit and connect.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much money you make, without positive reinforcement, you are setting yourself up for life failure. Who are your friends?

Along your journey to purpose, there will be many discouragements and reasons to give up. The only way to ensure you make it is to surround yourself with friends who are real with you, who add value to your life and who are committed to you.
