Where Before Meets After: Teaching/Speaking

Proverbs 31:26 She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

Do you hunger for the Word of God and long to teach it with authority and excellence? Yes
Is your heart burdened for hurting women? Yes
Is God calling you to a teaching/speaking ministry? Yes

I feel God's leading me to speak in some forum. I got a taste of this understudying Mizizi (beginner Bible study) at my church. One of the things I want to do in regard to that is to equip myself with the tools I need to effectively share a message, create a bio sheet, market my ministry, and polish my presentations.

For starters, once a week, I want to have five-minute teaching message prepared from a favorite passage in the Bible; and will deliver it to...my YouTube page - dress as though I'm speaking at an event and all. I haven't decided yet if they'll be public or not, we'll see how it goes. After that, I'll spend time brainstorming ideas for expanding that short message into a full-length talk. Hopefully the end result will be a renewed confidence in my calling as well as the tools I need to grow in my speaking. How cool would it be to live a life called by God to represent Him through the spoken word?

So, what I want to focus on is:

Introduction: How well did you open? Did it capture the attention of the audience?

Message: How well did you develop your subject? (Example: with story or knowledge of subject)

Support Material: Your use of support, such as Scripture, quotes, references, etc. Did you read from the Bible, a book, etc?

Style: How well is your use of grammar, volume and ability to speak clearly?

Conclusion: Did you build to a climax, end strong, and get your point across?

Delivery: Did you make eye contact, connect with the audience, and show passion about your subject?

Physical Appearance: Were you dressed professionally and appropriately? Were you sincere, believable, warm, and effective, etc?

I got the following "Helpful Guidelines for Your Presentations" from the She Speaks website:
1. Make sure your presentation is the correct length
2. Content must be based on a meaningful passage of Scripture since we will evaluate each speaker’s ability to teach the Word of God.
3. Make sure your message is Biblically based and includes Scripture and application.
4. You may use visual aids if they add to your message. Let your personality come through! Please make sure they don’t distract from your message.
5. If this is your first presentation, we recommend that you practice with friends and family in order for you to gain confidence and improve your presentation style.
6. Share what is unique to your life instead of something that you have heard or thought was clever. Remember – you are the only one that has “your story!”
7. Have fun!

So, see you back here next Friday.

Journey To BSSM Part 3

God showed off.

He pulled one out of his hat today. I woke up, first thing I did as usual was check my email, guess what I find waiting for me?

Update: Got this in the mail a couple weeks later

I GOT IN!!!!

I got my acceptance letter (e-mail) to BSSM! Can you even believe it?! I'm going to be worshiping here live and in person!

It’s insane! I texted my mom and sister immediately with the news. I had to leave for class at KU but the only thing on my mind all day was I GOT IN! The cool part is my profile page on the school website changed from “Applicant in 1st Year” to “Student in 1stYear” hahaha! How cool is that?!

The euphoria is amazing and the grace I feel right now and God’s hand over my life is so tangible! I absolutely don’t deserve this by my own merit, it’s because if Him and who I am (daughter of God) because if His great love for me.

I’m Bill Johnson’s and Kris Vallotton’s and Bethel Church’s student!
Are you kidding me?!!!

Mom got home and immediately asked to see the letter. In the middle of reading it, she told me to go see my aunt Catherine to advice me with some travel details. After she finished reading it, there was this long silence and I think it hit both of us:

1.       This is going to be near impossible. The amount of money and the sacrifice this would take is insane. I don’t know how I’ll do this. I don’t know if this is even feasible or a good idea. I was going over all this in my head and God reminded me that this isn’t about me. I was chosen to go to Bethel, it’s not about me, it’s not about the interview, it’s not about how good my application was or wasn’t. There’s a huge picture at play here. It may not be fully visible to me; maybe I’m a part of Bethel’s vision or Mavuno’s vision or my own vision to change this world. I don’t understand it fully but I know something huge is about to happen. I’m joining an army of revivalists and all He’s asking for me is to trust Him.

2.       This is real. I’m actually facing the prospect of leaving my family and starting over in a foreign country with absolutely no connections. I’ve never been away from my family. Now we’re looking at 9 months!

Anyway like I said, God’s been writing this story for the longest time and I’m more than willing to be player in it. I told Him, I don’t care how this ends up. I tasted His goodness and there’s no way I can go back to life without Him. He’s brought me from so far and He’s made me so happy!

This Church has changed my life. I’ve loved this school and this church and these people before I even knew about them. I have faith that what I’ve seen in my dreams and all the words spoken over me will be found in this journey. The hope I have for what’s to come makes me so happy and spurs me on in my pursuit.

The Grand Scheme

Today I made the final step in a process that's been long overdue. This is my last official year at home, my last official semester of school. When we were kids we used to say, "when I grow up I want to be..." and I'm there. Ha, I'm actually a grown up! This is the year where I get to be whatever I dreamt I would be and do all the things I dreamt I would do.

So, over the course of the last few months, I've been trying to get one of those dreams off the ground. Yesterday I was at the bank figuring some things out and finally today was the last step in that whole process, actually if you think about it, it's the 1st of many steps. I was at the post office trying to figure out how to mail an important letter and I was so freaked out wondering if it was going to make it safely or not and looking for the right post box, since there were 4 different boxes, pone for Nairobi, one for Coast, one for Air Mail and the other for Upcountry. I finally dropped it in and it made a loud sound and I'm freaking out thinking, "why would the box be empty??", and later realized, "Well, its a good thing it's empty that means the mail goes out everyday, right?"

Anyway, after I left the post office, I started thinking, in the grand scheme of things, this is the least of things I should be worried out. Like I said, mailing that letter was the 1st of many steps. There are a million other things to consider and to pray about and this is nothing. The letter will arrive safely! (In Jesus name, Amen and Amen!)

I'm re-reading Bill Johnson's book, Center of The Universe and he says,

"...why would God bypass my important list, filled with Spiritual priorities, and answer a desire that has nothing to do with anything that is obviously holy? The only answer I can come up with--because He wanted to
Our Heavenly Father is perfect in every way. There is no waste in Heaven's government. And in His perfect wisdom, He knew that it was more important for me to learn about His character as the Father than it was for me to have my "priority prayers" fulfilled...How refreshing it is to see that He cares about things that score very low on the Eternity Rating Chart just because He Loves Me."

He goes on to give the story of King Cyrus out of Isaiah 45:3 where God promises to do a whole lot of things for Cyrus that may not appear "spiritual" but just to show Cyrus beyond a shadow of a doubt that God had called Him and its God who put Him there.

Bill says,

"...God sometimes takes care of things that are not important just to remind us that He knows every desire and need we have. And as our Father, His reach is so far that it touches those things that have nothing to do with eternity. It seems to me that God simply wants to build our confidence in who He is and what He is like."

I'm trying really hard to work on my prayer life. It's like in my head, I know I should pray and I think about praying, but I just don't really get around to doing it. I feel like God is so into my life and I should do everything I can to lean into Him. So here's my strategy, it's a little weak, so don't get your hopes up. When it's time to pray, I sit/kneel or whatever and just be quiet. My problem is,

1. I hate quiet. I always have music playing or the TV on.
2. I just don;t know what to say!

So, I figure, if I get into the habit of setting time aside, sooner or later the words are going to come. Hopefully.

As always, I'll let ya know.

Seasons Of Life

So after my downer of a post yesterday, I came across this post on transition, the truth is, finishing college is getting to me. I have no idea what's coming up with my life next year. I don't know what I want to do, every single idea has been shot down by my siblings, I'm just at a loss. I know at some point the answers will come and at some point, I'm going to have to ignore everybody else's opinion and do what's right for me, but it's just a hard time, transition.

Mary Kat Ehnzeller is one of the artists on Jesus Culture's Emerging Voices album, that's how I found this blog post of hers. Enjoy and also get the album, I have it and I love it.

Re-blogged from Mary Kat Ehrenzeller

In times of transition, we can lose our footing. It's almost like God lets us lose ourselves that we would find ourselves all over again. Some seasons you can become comfortable and there is an ease and a familiarity in it all.

Those seasons are almost like a sense of home where you can come and just rest. You know where all the bathrooms are located. You know where all the dishes are in the kitchen, including the cleaning supplies and trash bags. You know the junk drawers well and even exactly how long the junk has been in there!

Yet, in transition, your identity can be tested. The questions can rummage through your mind of: "Who am I really?" You don't know where anything is. You've never even seen this place before.

It's uncomfortable and, at times, your heart can't even comprehend what is actually happening. You feel like you're going crazy or, better yet, you think it's the devil. However, most of the time, it's God shaking what can be shaken in your heart so only He can remain. He shakes the things we are trying to identify ourselves with that are not of Him.

He will tear us down to build us back up. He has been known to do this all throughout the Bible and He's really good at it. I love the quote that Kristine Mueller sings: "Redemption is so much better than perfection." These words have riveted straight through my heart because God is not about us being perfect in our own strife, but redeeming us from ourselves!

He wants to break us down that He can remake us. He wants to take away everything we have relied upon to make ourselves perfect in our own strength. He desires for only His fingerprints to remain that we would see His power.

Yes, we know the truth is that we have been made new in Christ. Yet, it didn't stop at salvation. No. He continues to make us new more and more everyday! He continues to strip off the old man making us more like Him!

So, as I speak to myself and you, take heart! If you are in a transitional season, this means there is movement. Movement means there is LIFE happening and it's happening all around you! It's time to rejoice for joy comes in the morning. Change is challenging but being made more into His image? Why not? Though it be painful at the time, it truly is worth it. Be encouraged, it's just a season.

Future Life Fridays: Mavuno Church - Discovery Internship Program

Today we're looking at my church's (Mavuno) internship program called Discovery.

Lets jump straight to the pros and cons.

Pros:
1. It's at home and it my home church!
2. Free, except for living expenses and mission trips
3. Mavuno has a large network f Churches and still growing and I could be a part of that
4. I'm already kinda bought into the vision of Mavuno, this church will change the world, how could I not want to be a part of that?!

Cons:
1. Not technically a "teaching" environment, more emphasis is placed on learning by service not by class-room teaching
2. Deadline for January intake is 30th September and deadline for August intake is 30th May; I wont have my certificate of completion from college until January, so I'll miss the January intake, then what will I do between January and August before the next intake? This could also be a pro because I can apply for a corporate internship/job and get my feet wet?
3. It's a little bit different from what I'm looking for, but its my best option here, next to going to seminary which is not possible for me at this stage.

I'm not sure if choosing the "safe option" will grow me or challenge my faith, but this is a pretty great option.

Lets see what they say on their website...

Within us all is the longing to be great… the longing to make our lives count for something that really matters. The qualities that are common to all great people are:
  • Character:  Live according to a set of values no matter what the cost
  • Competence: The ability to do the job at hand to the highest standard
  • Chemistry: Passionate about people and a cause that is bigger than themselves
Discovery provides the environment where you can develop these qualities so you become the leader that God created you to be.

During the year of Discovery you will be assigned to one of our locations and given responsibilities; you will attend classes on various topics and interact with a dynamic team of volunteers.  After Discovery many have gone on to pursue vocations in church, others in the corporate sector while others have gone on to advanced studies in various fields.

How does Discovery work?
Mavuno Church exists to turn ordinary people into fearless influencers of society. Discovery provides the right mix of elements in this process:
Environment - A focus on creative and innovative experiences geared at transformation rather than information.
Equipping
- Training that will impart you with the knowledge, skills and attitude you need to become a fearless influencer.
Experience
- Stretching assignments to help you learn the practical aspects of leadership
Exposure
- Interaction with many types of leaders who are models in a specific aspect of personal life and service.
Evaluation
- Honest feedback over time to enable you to learn from your experiences, training and relationships.

Mavuno is one church in many locations (Belle Vue Campus, Mavuno Downtown,  Mashariki in Eastlands and Mavuno in Kampala). The emphasis of Mavuno Church has been on being a loving community that shares the life-changing message of Jesus in ways that are relevant, practical and meaningful to succeeding generations. The vision is to plant a culture influencing church in every city of Africa and the gateway cities of the world.

As an Intern you will:
  • Interact at close range with leaders who are models
  • Discover your purpose, gifts and calling as you serve others
  • Develop a network of relationships that you need to succeed in life
  • Sharpen your leadership and management skills
  • Make an eternal difference in the lives of others
  • Have lots of fun!
Discovery will launch you on to your path to greatness!

Sounds pretty good huh?

Future Life Fridays - IHOPU-KC

Today we're looking at IHOPU-KC, that is, International House Of Prayer University in Kansas City.

On first glance, I'm not too sure about Kansas. Is that mid-west? Tornadoes?

Other than that, this is one of the best schools out there, next to BSSM. I think William Matthews went here. Anyway, down to the details:

Pros
1. Totally engaged in reviaval through prayer and worship
2. 24hour fully staffed prayer house
3. Incredibly active in ministry
4. Wide network
5. Student housing provided
6. Actual school as well as internships
7. Training in music as well as ministry

Cons
1. Pricey, aren't they all
2. Kansas, no sandy beaches, right? Weather?
3. No dating!

Anyway, here's some of their own words from the website:
If you long to encounter Jesus and to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, to study in an environment of 24/7 worship-based prayer, to become grounded in the Word of God, and to prepare for a lifelong walk with God, IHOPU may be exactly the school you’re looking for. Learn about our schools of ministry, music, and media, and the IHOPU experience.

The entire IHOPU curriculum is governed by our commitment to the centrality of God’s Word as taught from a scholarly perspective, and the four core values of the IHOP–KC Missions Base (I-H-O-P):
I: Intercession—corporate intercession as God’s means of releasing revival in a geographic region
H: Holiness of heart—lives of radical obedience flowing out of intimacy with God
O: Offerings to the poor—commitment to a lifestyle of simplicity and extravagant giving to the poor
P: Prevailing faith—confidence in God’s promise to release the power of the Holy Spirit upon the Church

I love the part about living simply and giving extravagantly! Never thought about it that way.

Future Life Fridays -BSSM

On this edition of Future Life Fridays, we feature one of my picks for a Church Internship, Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry.

 {via}

Pros
1. I love Bill Johnson's and Kris Vallotton's sermons. I respect how they are all about living what they preach, I respect their ability to not rely on public opinion but on God's opinion and their teachings are Bible centered and God focussed
2. I love Bethel music and to get to learn under them would be an incredible experience
3. Redding is a beautiful city with lots of outdoorsy stuff to do and normal climate
4. More affordable than most
5. Get to grow in maturity and confidence as a Christian and a Leader
6. Emphasis on loving Holy Spirit which is neglected in a lot of new churches
7. What's more inspirational than Banning Liebscher and the impact he's made on youth and young adults?
I could go on and on

Cons
1. Honestly, I just have one issue, which is a couple of pictures I saw online of some apparent BSSM students who went on a field trip to a cemetery. It's a flimsy con, because for all I know those pictures could be fake...anyway, just thought I'd be honest

Anyway, here's the breakdown from their website:

Mission: the school emphasizes that believers need to return to the ministry of signs and wonders—to minister in love, truth and the power of God. The mission of BSSM is to equip and deploy followers of Jesus Christ who passionately pursue transformation in their God-given spheres of influence. Students are trained to continue in the ministry style of Jesus: to enjoy the presence of God, say what He is saying, and do what He is doing.

Atmosphere: Boldness, passion and risk are center stage in Bethel’s school.  Emphasizes hands on training and experience along with academic understanding. This creates a do and teach culture where all of the students are expected to take risks to stretch their faith and grow in their understanding of God. BSSM believes that each verse of the Bible is an invitation into an experience with the Lord, therefore the students are challenged to live the Bible. This produces a class environment that often feels very much like a laboratory where disciples practice the things they are being taught while instructors coach the process and all this takes places in a setting of passionate worship.

Student Life: in-class hours are Monday through Thursday from 12:45 to 5:30, the school is full-time, five-days a week - minimum. The other hours consist of learning through homework, from an author or from the Holy Spirit as the students read the Word, attend services, serve on ministry teams, soaking & prayer times of personal devotion, living the supernatural lifestyle in an honorable way at work, and more. It's designed to equip students to live a supernatural lifestyle, not just minister in the gifts of the Spirit. They are encouraged to be naturally supernatural by bringing heaven to earth wherever they go.
Therefore BSSM by design, does not have dorms. Instead we encourage students to live in the outreach neighborhoods and get jobs in the local area so that they can practice bringing Jesus to the market place as a part of their learning experience. Most of our students work part-time jobs while they attend school.
The school has no general restriction on dating for our single people, which is so common to most ministry schools. Rather, we have chosen to teach our students how to have healthy relationships and live in purity.
Of course, learning without a lot of external restrictions creates a need for a high level of discipleship, personal responsibility and accountability in the lives of our students. This is accomplished through small group interaction and a covenant community which embraces honesty, transparency and confrontation.

Academic Life: Taught by apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers - not by professors or theologians. BSSM students learn how to read, understand, and “do” the Bible - how to cast out demons, witness, heal the sick, prophesy, preach, pray, practice His presence and much more.
The BSSM students learn in large group sessions, revival groups of 60-70 people, small groups of 5, and on their own.
There are also classes entitled Advance Ministry Training. Here, students choose the subjects they are passionate about and called to train in; areas such as leading worship, children’s ministry, preaching, prophecy, intercession, intimacy with God, youth, and career ministry. .
Reading on your own time is expected and is a large part of our curriculum. There are approximately 2400 pages of mandatory reading throughout the year. That works out to 10 pages of reading everyday of the 240 days from beginning to graduation. That’s on top of 2-3 chapters of the Word daily. So plan on reading 30 – 60 minutes a day minimum.

Finances:(doesn't include housing, food, living expenses)

Non-Refundable application fee:
$35 = 2,800/-
Tuition:
Includes 1-2 closed-circuit television conferences a year, textbooks and costs of city outreaches:
$4,200 = 336,000/-
Expenses not covered by tuition:
Cost of an optional mid-year missions trip

$0 - $3,500 = 280,000/-
International Students: A lot of information and support is given here

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Letter To My Teenage Kids Part 9

Part 9 of the letter…

Save yourself, your heart, your body for true love. By the time you turn 25 and a guy you love tells you I’ve only been with one chic and you you’re counting down a list you started in High School, you won’t be able to face him. Take my word for it,
1. no one you meet now will be there when you’re 25.
2. The good guys that you’ll want to go out with and are hot and sweet and kind and generous are not having sex. They’re the ones telling their girlfriends to wait.

One of my best friends now is a guy, and he and his girlfriend have dated for a year and he has never asked her for sex and isn’t even planning on it. And he’s an awesome guy, like buying chocolates and flowers kind of awesome. I can tell you of many other great guys whose priority isn’t sex, like my cousin, he’s cute but he is also very wise, like he speaks and people listen, his girlfriend, is special enough to him that for Christmas he asked to bring her all the way to Shaggz, and she went and guys were so happy and proud of my cousin. Again, never had sex, not planning on it. That girl walks around feeling valued and loved.

Please listen to me, and more than that hear me. That’s one thing you won’t regret. I can also give you examples of guys who have been having sex since they were 13 years old. These guys end up crying in our church for regretting hurting dozens of women, they cry about being sex addicts, they cry about abortions they’ve sponsored and women who they’ve destroyed, they cry about ruining their own lives, they cry over regrets. It’s a completely different story.

Anyway, as for me, I know God knows my heart and knows I want to be a young, hot wife and a young, fun mom, and I know at some point those things will come, in a special and amazing way that even I won’t believe. But for now, instead of trying to find “the one”, I’m working on being “the one” Can’t look for prince charming if I’m not worthy of being called “Mrs. Charming” I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging, but the improvements I’ve made in my life and my personality in the past, like, 6 weeks alone, that guy is going to be one crazy, lucky guy, and I’ll keep on growing and changing and being better and dreaming dreams and achieving those dreams even after he comes, even after that ring is on my finger, because this life is my God-given life and I only get this one shot.

I know day by day, my past is being further and further removed from me and the way I end this chapter of my life will be nothing like I began it, and this same chance is open to you. All you have to do is receive it.

I’m here if you need to talk.

Love, Joanne

Letter To My Teenage Kids Part 5

Part 5 of the letter…

So, I spent yet another valentine’s day alone, guess what? I didn’t die, I was so busy that day actually I didn’t realize until one of my friends bought me lunch. But let me tell you all I’ve done that I haven’t done the past 5 years because my life revolved around boys. In the past 2 months alone,
ü  I’ve gotten A’s and B’s compared to the C’s and D’s I’d been getting
ü  All my lecturers know my name because I’m more active in class
ü  I’ve gotten awesome friends from my school and church
ü  I’ve gone back to doing my CPA’s now that I have time
ü  I’m re-learning to swim
ü  I’m learning to play guitar
ü  I have a writing job for two websites; writing has always been my passion.
ü  I’m starting to learn Spanish
ü  I’m planning on joining the worship team
ü  I’ve gone back to working hard to find a way to travel, trusting God that by 2014, I’ll have boarded a few planes.
ü  I’m back to writing songs again! This is my favorite because I haven’t written anything since my before the ex-experience. I love this, writing songs to God…its amazing!

The possibilities are endless. Now for you, realistically, no one is marrying you when you’re in High School, when you’re a teenager for that matter. God keeps giving you second chances and its time your recognized them and took advantage.

Future Life Fridays...1. Family Life

I've decided to start a new series here called Future Life Fridays. Basically, if I could write a letter to myself in 20 years, what I'd like it to sound like, so I'm going to find people who inspire me and ask them for little interviews, what worked for them, and how they got there. Or if I find something that makes sense, I could feature it here.

This week though, I'm lucky enough have gotten my very first interview. Jane's been one of those people I've always looked up to, I guess in a lot of ways I'm trying to walk in her footsteps, because she's been inspirational to me. I met her, in a time in my life where I was in desperate need of advice and she looked upon me with love.

Today, I’m lucky enough to interview a woman, who I wish I could be in 15 years. At the age of 36, Jane has achieved career success, spiritual growth and best of all, has a loving and supportive family comprised of a doting husband, Gavin and 4 adorable kids. She’s truly one of the happiest people I know, and having celebrated their 10-year anniversary, part of the most amazing couple I’ve met. We take a look at her journey, celebrate and get inspired.

What would be your biggest piece of advice?
I’d have to say, the two P’s, patience and prayer. Patience in the sense that you can exercise the right to say no or to say wait. Those words are good enough for God, but people, especially girls don’t realize it’s good enough for them. I know that, because I didn’t realize it either. Don’t jump from one relationship to the next, wait a while and rebuild yourself. Don’t say yes to a relationship right away, take a while and douse it in prayer. Don’t say yes to sex, don’t allow that to be the pinnacle of your relationship, save it for your wedding night, trust me, all those rumors and lies the world spout of how you’ll end up incompatible or whatever, honey it’s a lie. Build your lives together first, then let that be the icing on the cake. I mean, good things take time. Prayer comes along every step of the way. Before every move you make, pray. Pray together. It’ll help you stave off temptation and I cannot describe the connection you make.

What were you looking for in a man?

I guess I can split that into two. What made me notice a guy was if he was attractive to me, a Christian and if he was a positive hustler (laughing)…

Wait, what’s a positive hustler?

Ha, you caught that? A positive hustler is like, a guy whose driven, smart, bright, you know, who has other stuff going on other than, you know, his job, like involved in other hopefully income-generating activities. I looked for that, because I knew myself. I’m a dreamer. I have all these big ideas and I need someone who’s a realist who’ll say, this is the way we can do this and achieve this, or no, that’s not something we can do.

Ok, what else were you looking for?

Well, apart from those three. I think the rest wasn’t really what I was looking for, but more of, as I got to know someone, what would make me love them, what would make me theirs. I think the Christian part encompasses those things, patient, loving, kind, generous, faithful…just someone who’d understand me, my sense of humor, my stories, my personality, was affectionate and someone who would fight for me, rather than flee at the first sign of trouble. Like if I said no at his request would he be mad and stomp off? If I said, I’m not ready for sex with you and I want to wait, would he jump into bed with someone else and dump me the next day? Someone who fights for you will fight for your relationship and ultimately fight for your family and your marriage.

What are some of the practices you can say have made your marriage work?

There’s so much! I have to say, that we pray. It’s not easy for us, we both work and have kids and at the end of the day, we just want to get in bed and sleep. So, recognizing that, we have a little devotion book we read from and a prayer that we write out every week at our therapy session covering our issues for that week and we just quickly say that at the end of the day. It’s not perfect, trust me, sometimes we’re half-asleep, sometimes we’re mad at each other, but we have to do that, and kiss goodnight and say I love you. Then, we read to our kids, and most of the bed-time stories, at least all for the two youngest kids, are all Bible stories.

You mentioned therapy. How did that start? Why do you need therapy, when you seem so happy?

We are at a great place in our marriage, and we’d like to keep it that way (laughing) Our therapy, started out as going to pre-marital and marital classes and seminars and just anywhere we could get  information to help us grow. I have to admit it started as me forcing him to go! After a while, it got enjoyable, especially when we took on a more involved role as mentors for pre-marital classes, and we started talking. It opened our communication to another level. We learned word like,’ love languages’ and ‘disappointed’ and ‘disagree’ rather than give each other the silent treatment or shout at each other to communicate. The therapy is just an avenue to air issues out and as an added bonus, have this uninvested third party help us keep a level head and make decisions that are best for both of us, not one of us. Sometimes selfishness gets in the way, especially after you’re used to someone, you get more comfortable being selfish and its good sometimes to have someone to shame you into doing the right thing. Also we agreed from early on, we don’t discuss our issues with anybody else but God. There’s a pressure that family and friends can create that we recognized would hurt us. God, just happened to use our wonderful doctor recommended to us by our Pastor.

What are some other practices you’ve developed in your marriage?

For me, one thing I try and do is set the mood for the day. I heard my daughter say to our nanny once, “Mommy’s in a bad mood, so daddy’s in a bad mood, so I’m in a bad mood” and it killed me. So, I wake up in the morning, kiss everyone good morning and be as bright as can be, then I go into the car and be as moody as I feel, go to work and perk back up, go to the gym and work it out, get home and kiss everyone hello. I just want my kids to think of me as a happy person and my husband to look forward to coming home, you know?
Another is having a date night. Therapy is good for this, because we have our one hour session and go out after, so we know that time of the week is blocked out. My daughters also go on a date with their dad and their brothers every other late Saturday afternoon. We agree it’s important that our daughters know how precious they are and know how they deserve to be treated and for our sons to learn how to be gentlemen. Sunday is for the family. On Saturdays, before their dinner, I hang out with the kids; it can be watching movies, girly days in, or watch their sports or play video games, or play dates and parties or whatever else may come up. During the week we try to have one on one time for the kids…control freak that I am, I have a little chart for that. It’s not that I need it, or that I don’t remember which of my kids I hung out with, it’s just to keep track because I know how important it is to feel that one on one time.
We’re also affectionate with our kids and really as open with them as we can be at their age. We hope to model the right kind of love for them and make them feel secure in the family. Which is also why we don’t argue, or rather raise our voices in front of the kids. It’s great because, it give us time to sort of cool our heads down so we aren’t mean and hurtful. I mean you have a tiff and it could be anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours before you can get away from the kids to address it. We’ve sometimes resorted to passing notes or texting sometimes, it’s funny but I like it.

What was dating like for you?

It wasn’t all rules like it seems, trust me! We had fun, we went out on normal dates, and a couple of not so normal ones, just fun and out of the box. We met at a time in my life where I’d been single for a while, kind of recovering from a series of bad choices I’d made in a past relationship and just trying to build my life back up, determine what I wanted to do, build my faith in God, and just try to recover form a hard time and a period in my life I’d made so many mistakes and my self-value was shattered. I was just taking time to get back some sense of worth, and God just helped me see that despite all I’d done and how badly I’d made a mess of me, I was still precious in His sight. He came when I was just beginning to be whole again. It took a while before I was open to the idea of being exclusive, I wanted to know he was worth it, and he was.

You have 4 kids. How has having kids change the dynamic of you relationship?

Yeah, I have two boys and two girls; they are roughly 2, 4, 6 and 8. We were definitely scared about how having kids would change us, because we’d been married for a couple of years and we already had our own groove and routine and life was seemingly perfect. Especially because we wanted to space our kids like that, as closely as healthily and financially possible, we expected it would be a lot of work and we didn’t know if we were ready. Our first child was definitely God kicking us out of the nest to see if we could fly. It was definitely God-planned and miraculous in so many ways, and we just had to go from there. Seeing how Gavin totally transitioned into this new role, was incredible. There were times I even tested him to see how far he would go like, midnight cravings of roasted corn on the cob, and my sweet babe would throw some in the microwave and char them up a bit with our kitchen blowtorch so it looked authentic, (at the time I didn’t know the blowtorch bit, and I thought he’d actually grilled them) It got to a point though where I felt so guilty because after one of my midnight runs he overslept and he was late for a really important meeting at work. Needless to say, I’ve never craved anything that I couldn’t get for myself again! Anyway, during my pregnancies, he became really nurturing and just let that side of him come out more. He became extremely protective, of what I ate, where I went, how I felt, stretching his arm out across me on the passenger seat when we hit a road bump, just making sure we were safe.
Once the kids came, just seeing how he was with them, how involved he wanted to be, made me love him so much more. Of course there’s no way I can look at my kids and see those little resemblances traits they share and not love him more.

What are your parenting principles?

I wouldn’t really call them principles, we’re still new at this and there’s a lot of trial and error. I guess some stuff that we’ve established is that we want our kids to be close, so despite how big of a house we’ll ever have, our girls share a room and our boys share a room. It’s a challenge because the baby may wake up the older one, but it works most nights, and it makes the older kid feel a level of responsibility. Another is that feeding times aren’t just mommy time; I pump, oh gosh, sorry too much information! (Laughing) Anyway, so my hubby gets a chance to feed the babies and for the older kids, we try to split it as much as possible. We don’t want a case where if one of us isn’t home, the kids won’t eat because they’re only used to the other parent feeding them. Another is that our marriage comes first as much as possible, happy mommy and daddy, happy home. We’re lucky enough to have family and help who are willing to take on 4 kids under the age of 8 to babysit so we can have some time alone. Then we spend as much time as we can with our kids, love on them, teach them and show them the benefits of relying on God, not just in words but in actions and just to be there for them in spite of anything.

Any last words?

I truly thank God every day, just for providing these ideas from people who’ve gone before us, and for giving me a handsome husband who’s patient with me and tries them, as much as they drive him crazy. I think he’d do anything for us and to ensure our well-being, as a couple, and as a family. He’s our kid’s hero, he’s my superman and that’s not something I take for granted. I usually joke around that Mexican soap operas and fairytales have nothing on me, and it’s a joke, but that’s how I choose to look at my life. I’m just thankful for him and what we’re building.

(editors note: she actually said handsome instead of husband lol)
